Memberfest: Edith Wharton’s Bunner Sisters

MEMBERFEST presents
a work in progress Reading of

Edith Wharton’s Bunner Sisters

written by Richard Alleman
directed by Anthony Newfield
featuring Anne Buelteman, Delphi Harrington*, Carole Monferdini, Erin Neufer, Josiah Polhemus, & Amy Prosser.

Inspired by a little-known Edith Wharton novella, this powerful new play looks at the underside of the Gilded Age, following the lives of two spinster sisters running a modest sewing business in 1880s New York City. When an unattached man enters the picture, their complacent existence is turned upside down. Wharton’s Bunner Sisters takes audiences on a dramatic journey to a not so innocent age, with many of the same problems we face today—from income inequality to the precarious status of women in our society.

Rich and warmly rendered. An unforgettable time in the theatre. – Anna Deavere Smith
The very stuff of drama and no less tragic than that of Agamemnon. –Ann Roth

All the Stupid Bitches

Six white ladies come together in a home in the suburbs of middle America, where they are going to receive an Avon-lady style pitch from a make-up company representative. When the hostess' black neighbor pays them a surprise visit, we learn about what each woman values and what they don't--as their particular biases and beliefs are exposed. Part living room farce, part study of white apathy, All the Stupid Bitches is a cringe-worthy expose of white women written by a white woman.
