A Celebration of African-American Women Playwrights

Ensemble Studio Theatre (Curt Dempster, artistic director) presents “Going To The River”, a gala festival of staged readings by remarkable African-American women playwrights, produced and coordinated by award-winning actress/director Elizabeth Van Dyke.

Sponsored by American Express, and performed entirely at Ensemble Studio Theatre, (549 W. 52nd Street 2nd floor- Manhattan), “Going To The River 2006” promises to be the best, most informative, productive and entertaining installment in the series’ six-year history.

The festival opens on Tuesday June 27th with a tribute to Kia Corthron, followed by a staged reading of “Waking Women”, written by award-winning playwright Cassandra Medley, whose critically acclaimed play “Relativity” recently completed a successful run at EST.

On Wednesday June 28th (7:00 pm), there will be a panal discussion entitled, “THE BALANCING ACT: The Playwright & Director Relationship in Birthing New Work”, moderated by Richard Wesely, Chairman of the Playwriting Department at NYU.

On Thursday, June 29th (7:00 pm) a staged-reading of Bridgette A. Wimberly’s “Mail”, directed by Pat Golden , marks another high theatrical note.
